Home Fire (Kevil, Kentucky – 1950s)
$70.00 – $2,180.00
A painterly, contemporary treatment of a vintage photograph by Carroll Lane (“Joe”) Ouverson and undertaken here by his son. These small dwellings were home and comfort to many modest families of the period. Fires were too common, and they moved fast and hot enough to melt metal siding and warp the frame girders.
Description
“Joe” Ouverson was the family photographer in his earlier years. Later, something shifted. What it was we don’t know, but the visual record stops. His negatives and slides have lived through multiple muddy Midwest floods, mold and fungus in the Everglades, and various damage from decades of general rough-and-tumble.
They are a treasure valued mostly by one, although some relatives will find themselves caring, too. Or their kids will, or they will not.
This image depicts an honest slice of life. It has not been dramatized or made overly sentimental, nor any clever title assigned to it. There were real people here. Workdays, holiday meals, arguments, and love.
